Coral and Coconuts
By Aldous Bertram

A charmingly illustrated tour of Palm Beach’s landmarked streets and buildings, rendered in Aldous Bertram’s whimsical watercolors and accompanied by James Reginato’s lively, anecdotal textFew towns in America have an architectural heritage as distinguished and well–preserved as that of Palm Beach, Florida. Since the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach was founded in 1980, some 300 properties have been landmarked, and restorations have saved threatened buildings and neighborhoods. To illustrate dozens of the most significant of the landmarked streets and buildings on the island, the foundation enlisted the gifted artist Aldous Bertram, who has rendered them in exquisite watercolors. Depicted on these pages are architectural masterpieces dating from the late 19th century to the mid–20th century, including Carrère & Hastings’ Beaux–Arts Whitehall (now the Flagler Museum), Marion Sims Wyeth’s Spanish Revival Hogarcito and Mar–a–Lago for Marjorie Merriweather Post, Addison Mizner’s Mediterranean–style Phipps Plaza, Howard Major’s Bermuda–style Major Alley, and Schultze & Weaver’s Renaissance Revival the Breakers. With a lively, informative text by James Reginato, a veteran chronicler of tastemakers and their lifestyle, and a lavish gatefold map of the island denoting all of the illustrated sites, Coral & Coconuts: Palm Beach Streets & Landmarks is an irresistible keepsake for everyone who has visited Palm Beach and/or values the preservation of America’s architectural treasures.
